This style of a Buddha image developed in Greater Gandhara at the time of the Kushans and from 6th century onwards spread through the Silk Road into the rest of Central Asia, Qyzyl and China. This stucco head is painted with red, blue and black pigments and has a ‘snail-curls’ hair knot.  The three-quarter closed eyes are painted with blue lapis lazuli pigment and the lips are painted red, showing a spiritual smile during meditation.
