Ancient Gandhara

From the life of Siddhartha where Maitreya and Siddhartha are shown together visiting the Buddhist temple/vihara. From the accounts of the Chinese pilgrims we know that at least from the time of Kanishka to the latter half of the fifth century, Gandhara was dotted with magnificent stupas and impressive monasteries, or viharas. Most of these were probably destroyed during the campaigns of the Huns, between 455 and 520 AD; see Wheeler, Antiquity, 22, 1949, pp 10–11.
