6 • An Outstanding Pair of Pallasite Meteorite Slices

Imilac, Chile; circa 4.5 billion years old
Discovered in 1822
Both 16 × 11 cm; Iron, nickel, olivine
196 & 214 grams

Pallasites are extremely rare, only 61 are known to date and they represent just 0.2% of all known meteorites. When they do arrive, however, they certainly make an impression: bejewelled with crystals of olivine and widely regarded as the most beautiful substance to have ever arrived to us from outer space.

This pair once belonged to an asteroid during the dawn of our solar system’s life, most likely formed by impacts between early planets. More recently they were part of Pierre Delpuech’s remarkable collection of meteorites in Paris.
