36 • A Lady in Stone

China; 18th century, Qing dynasty
28 cm high; Stone & walnut stand

This smooth polished stone rewards the viewer from both angles with an unexpected sight – the profile of a beautifully proportioned female head.

She is elegantly poised – her head tilted slightly and chin held high, she has delicate cheekbones and her hair is gathered up. No doubt a reminder for the scholar on whose desk this sat of what was most dear to him.

Amongst the black stone there are notable inclusions of golden brown, most prominent along the hairline and chin.
