30 • A Bactrian Stone Pillar

Central Asia; 2,000–3,000 BC
33 cm high; Brecciated marble

The function of pillars such as these remain a mystery and as a result they are usually described as ‘ritual objects,’ though why remains just as much a mystery. However, they are beautiful beyond their enigma – hand carved marble in waistlike form flaring out into a broad base, each with a shallow groove across its diameter. Intriguing minimalism from one of the great epicentres of the ancient world.
