35 Afghan Tanbur

35 • An Afghan Tanbur

Afghanistan, early to mid-20th century
150 cm long
Bowl: calabash
Soundboard: mulberry wood
Inlays: mother-of-pearl

A very large and impressive specimen, probably from either Kabul or Mazar. It looks as though one side has been blown out: probably by musical might. Alternatively, it would not look out of place as a contemporary reminder of the importance of music in Afghan culture, albeit battered by years of war.
