A Mandolin-Guitar

11 • A Mandolin Guitar

France, circa 1925
97 cm long
Spruce, maple, rosewood

An incredibly rare example of a ‘duplex’ instrument, conceived as much as a sculpture as a musical instrument. Its style and decoration are typical of the Italian luthiers who settled in Paris during the early 1920s following the rise of fascism in Italy, where both instruments were popular accompaniments to the romances of the time. The materials used are expected but the use of veneer for the decorative paintings on top of the two soundboards is exceptional.
