34 • Basalt Pebble Carved as a Mouflon
Indus Valley, 3rd millennium BC
Size: 5.3 cm high, 6.7 cm long
The nature of the mouflon, so perfectly expressed with minimum modulation of the pebble’s surface, appears more 20th century than five millennia old. This shape of basalt pebble was formed by magma released under water, and its probable origin was the Deccan plateau.
